Massachusetts Republicans keep pushing for casino15 May 2008BOSTON, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Massachusetts Standard-Times: "The Massachusetts House dealt casino gambling a stinging defeat two months ago, but the fight is not over in the state Senate. "Senate Republicans will try to amend the state budget to legalize casino gambling when the Senate debates its proposed $28 billion spending plan next week. "Senate Minority Leader Richard Tisei, R-Wakefield, said Wednesday he will file an amendment adopting Gov. Deval Patrick's plan to allow three, state-licensed casinos. The governor would give special weight to the state's two federally recognized Indian tribes, the Mashpee Wampanoag and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah). "The House defeated the casino bill by a vote of 108 to 46 in March. "...But Gov. Patrick's office warned casino supporters not to get their hopes up. "...Unlike the House, the Senate does not have a rule precluding casinos from being raised in the budget debate..." |
