Massachusetts' neighbors look for casino action

MASSACHUSETTS -- As reported by the Boston Herald: "As Gov. Deval Patrick gets ready to announce whether he will support casino gambling, the Bay State's northern neighbors may be looking for their own piece of the action.

"A legislative panel in New Hampshire is considering a proposal by a Nevada casino company to bring in thousands of slot machines at Rockingham Park, just a quick 45-minute ride from Boston in the border town of Salem.

"And Maine is gearing up for a major gambling expansion. It plans to turn a temporary slots hall in Bangor into a full-fledged 'racino,' or combined casino and race track, by next summer.

"These moves come as Connecticut's two giant casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, undertake major expansions. And, in Rhode Island, the old Lincoln Park dog track has been transformed into the Twin River casino.

"The escalating gambling activity on the state's borders is likely to give more ammunition to gambling boosters in Massachusetts, who argue the state is losing hundreds of millions in potential tax revenue as local gamblers drive out of state to get their fix..."
