Massachusetts Mayor Calls for Legalized Casino

FALL RIVER, Massachusetts – As reported by the (Fall River) Herald News: "City Council President William F. Whitty is calling for legalized casino gambling and the construction of two casinos in Massachusetts to bolster the state's struggling economy.

"Whitty announced Monday that he will bring a resolution before the City Council next week that would urge local legislators 'to move forward on this critical issue and sponsor and support a state bill that would bring casino gambling to Massachusetts thereby stopping the money drain from Massachusetts to Connecticut.'

"Whitty cited a recent University Massachusetts Dartmouth report that revealed Massachusetts residents spent $829 million at Connecticut's two casinos last year.

"…The City Council president is throwing his support behind building two casinos in the state: one in Southeastern Massachusetts south of Route 128 and another in the western portion of the state.

"…By building casinos in Massachusetts, Whitty said the state would create a new source of revenue.

"…Whitty said he also believes casinos would bring thousands of needed jobs to the state. Over the past three years, Whitty said Massachusetts has lost jobs faster than any other state, a fact which he said the U.S. Department of Labor released last week…"
