Massachusetts Lawmakers Quietly Plot Casino Push

MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Herald: "Gambling backers are quietly plotting another push on Beacon Hill in a bid to bring Las Vegas-style casino games to Massachusetts.

"Despite a disastrous State House showing last year for casino bills, a key state lawmaker is quietly circulating gambling legislation and weighing another drive to bring slots and casinos to Massachusetts.

"Sen. Michael Morrissey (D-Quincy) is weighing a late spring rollout of a bill that would hand thousands of slot machines to local racetracks and flash the green light to a pair of giant resort casinos.

"The Senate's point man on gambling, Morrissey said yesterday he also may opt to do nothing. But with budget haggling expected to intensify in May, the Quincy lawmaker says there may be renewed interest in casino revenue potential to replenish needy state coffers.

"…It calls for up to 2,000 slot machines at each of the state's four dog and horse tracks, provides for an Indian casino in Southeastern Massachusetts and another casino potentially located on Massachusetts Turnpike-owned land in Warren, Massaschusetts…"
