Massachusetts inquiry looks at track woes

SALEM, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Eagle Tribune: "After 13 years of false starts, Rockingham Park Manager Ed Callahan isn't holding his breath that a new inquiry by the state House of Representatives will bring video gambling to the horse racing track.

"...What the Legislature might do, though, is pass a pro-gaming bill to solve the state's education funding woes, or bring much needed revenue to other struggling state programs.

"Callahan, along with representatives from Salem's local government, are going to a meeting of a House Ways and Means subcommittee on gambling Thursday. The panel plans to hear testimony from experts, lobbyists and officials on both sides of the debate.

"...The horse racing park's woes have become more pronounced in recent years. The track no longer hosts thoroughbred racing because it can't afford to, Callahan said.

"The possibility of new casinos in Massachusetts puts Rockingham Park at further risk, Callahan said..."
