Massachusetts governor's decision expected soon29 August 2007SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Republican: "Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Murray said yesterday that Gov. Deval L. Patrick will decide shortly whether to advocate for the expansion of gambling in Massachusetts. "In an interview after a convocation at Western New England College School of Law, where Murray gave the keynote speech, the lieutenant governor said that Patrick is studying a lengthy report produced by an internal task force in July. "... He declined to comment on which direction Patrick may be leaning on gambling, but said the state has significant revenue needs. The administration inherited billions in 'deferred maintenance' projects, Murray said, including improvements to transportation, higher education and public housing, while Patrick's plan for free preschool and free community college would require substantial funds. "...'There are several gambling models to consider, some more successful than others,' Murray said, adding, 'we want to look at those best practices.' "Although Murray initially said Patrick would make the announcement next week, after Labor Day, Patrick's office said yesterday afternoon that it will be in September..." |
