Massachusetts governor stands by estimate27 September 2007BOSTON, Massachusetts -- As reported by the Boston Herald: "Gov. Deval Patrick said Wednesday he welcomes outside review of his casino revenue estimates, arguing his projections are conservative and provide 'the most compelling case' to expand legalized gambling. "Patrick's confidence comes a day after House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, an opponent of expanded gambling, said Patrick's figures need analyzing and despite the governor ignoring his advisers' recommendation that estimates be checked by outside experts. "...Patrick's plan calls for Massachusetts to license three resort casinos dispersed across the state — one each in the western, southeastern, and Boston regions. The governor estimates three casinos would generate up to $450 million in annual tax revenue. "Rep. Daniel Bosley, a North Adams Democrat and vocal opponent of casino gambling, said Patrick's estimates sound similar to other estimates offered by casino supporters in the past. "...Before unveiling his plan, advisers urged Patrick to enlist outside experts to check estimates about jobs and tax revenues, which Patrick didn't do. The recommendation was included in an internal report prepared by advisers to help the governor decide whether to support casino gambling. Patrick's office said the governor's economic team conducted its own analysis of jobs and revenue estimates in the weeks after Patrick received that recommendation..." |
