Massachusetts Considers Slots for Tracks

RAYNHAM, Massachusetts – As reported by the Boston Globe: "For the past half century, the scene at Raynham Park has been the same: Bells ring and a pack of greyhounds streaks around a quarter-mile oval. At the teller windows, bets come in and winnings go out.

"The next 18 months will determine whether that tradition survives intact.

"In the spring, the state Legislature will consider legalizing slot machines at Raynham Park and the state's other three racetracks. Slot machines could mean millions in new revenue, but making Raynham into what is known as a 'racino' -- a gambling venue akin to a casino -- would alter what has become an institution in Southeastern Massachusetts. Elsewhere in the country, the live races have become almost afterthoughts to the slot machines.

"…These two controversial issues -- expanded gambling and banning dog racing -- are potentially linked, with slot machines offering an alternate revenue source should voters outlaw the sport.

"…Raynham Park owner George Carney said he is prepared to battle on both fronts -- for slot machines and against the prohibition of dog racing…"
