Massachusetts Bands Appeal Recognition Decision

MASSACHUSETTS – As reported by the Boston Globe: "Both bands of Massachusetts Nipmuc Indians who were denied federal recognition in June have filed appeals with the Interior Department's Board of Indian Appeals.

"The Sutton-based Hassanamiscos and the Dudley-based Chaubunagungamaugs both filed additional documentation to prove they have been active politically and socially as tribes since historic times.

"…In its June decision, the Bureau of Indian Affairs found that neither group proved it had been active since historic times. The Hassanamisco band failed to meet four of the seven criteria necessary for recognition, while the Chaubunagungamaug band failed to meet three of the criteria.

"…Hassanamisco tribal leaders have said they are interested in building a casino. The group owns 4 acres of land in Thompson, Conn., on the Massachusetts border…"
