Massachusett casinos gain public support12 May 2008MASSACHUSETTS -- As reported by the Standard Times: "...Despite the devastating legislative defeat of his casino initiative two months ago, the governor is asked at nearly every turn whether he'll continue to push for expanded gaming, especially as the debate over next year's budget heats up. "Proponents of slot machines at the state's four pari-mutuel race tracks say part of the fallout of the casino vote in the House called for a legislative hearing on their proposal this year. "And polls keep showing that public support for casinos is strong and growing. "The Standard-Times has learned that a recent statewide poll, commissioned by Citizens for Limited Taxation, showed the strongest support yet for casino gaming in Massachusetts. "The poll, conducted by Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates of Alexandria, Va., shows support for casinos running at almost two to one: 61 percent in favor and 32 percent opposed. "Those numbers are even stronger than those from a poll conducted by the UMass Center for Policy Analysis, which showed 58 percent in favor and 32 percent opposed. "...Despite the public support, Gov. Deval Patrick is saying the casino option likely won't be reconsidered until next year..." |
