Massachusett candidates split on casino

WEST BOYLSTON, Massachusetts – As reported by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette: "Candidates in the Democratic primary for the 14th Worcester District in the House of Representatives showed a variety of opinions on the death penalty, casino gambling, marijuana law and whether this town is really just an extension of Worcester's West Boylston Street.

"…The question raised by the audience about casino gambling split the candidates. Worcester District 2 City Councilor Phillip P. Palmieri said he does not think casino gambling is the answer to the town's revenue woes.

"Both Joseph O'Day of West Boylston and Ms. [Tammy] Vescera, a special education instructional assistant in the Worcester schools, expressed concerns about the social problems that accompany gambling, and both said they could not say last night whether they could support legalized gambling.

"But Mr. [Paul J.] Shea said, 'I'm 110 percent for it,' saying he'd like to see Massachusetts get the tax revenue that Connecticut gets from its casinos. He said he does not believe anyone from Massachusetts would be hurt by a casino…"
