Mashpee town, tribe ratify deal8 April 2008MASHPEE, Massachusetts -- As reported the Cape Cod Times: "The Wampanoag tribe may still face opposition in Middleboro, but here, it's harmony. "Nearly 350 voters — tribe members included — turned out last night for a special town meeting and overwhelmingly ratified an agreement between the tribe and town. "The agreement, which largely protects the town from land claims and a casino, was the product of more than a year and a half of negotiations between the selectmen and the tribal council. "...The agreement sets out parameters for the relationship between the town and the newly recognized tribe going forward, but it does not go into detail about issues like police and fire services. "...Under the agreement, the tribe promises not to seek any private or town-owned land. "...The tribe also promises under the agreement that it won't build a Class II or Class III casino in Mashpee. "...In return for the tribe's promises, the town agrees to help the tribe put 140 acres in Mashpee into trust with the federal government, freeing the land from local and state taxes and restrictions..." |
