Maryland Town Gives Mixed Slots Message21 January 2004OCEAN CITY, Maryland – As reported by the Delmarva Daily Times: "The mayor and Town Council asked for a public affirmation Tuesday night of their opposition to slot machines in Ocean City or outside its limits. "The town 'doesn't need to be resuscitated by an industry known as gambling,' Mayor Jim Mathias said at the resort's council meeting. "The council set aside a comment period for residents to debate Gov. Robert Ehrlich's public support for slots in racetracks like Ocean Downs in West Ocean City. "…The viewpoints residents delivered were more muddled than the council's straightforward opposition: Four people said they grudgingly accepted slots confined to racetracks as a way to repair the state's $500 million budget deficit, and fund education in particular. "…Some supporters said the state would be wiser to start taxing slot revenues than to raise income taxes. "…Three opponents of gambling anywhere in the state spoke, and encouraged the council to hold its position…" |
