Maryland slots proposal faces crucial vote7 December 2009ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- The proposal to bring slot machines to Anne Arundel County is in limbo as anti-gambling lobbysts are making a final push before a Monday vote, according to The (Baltimore) Sun. The Anne Arundel County Council is expected to decide on Monday whether to allow a slots parlor near the Arundel Mills Mall. The council could also allow slots near Laurel Park, according to the Sun. Voters in November approved a ballot initiative to allow slot machines in the state. But powerful business and political interests on both sides of the aisle have put pressure on the council. The Anne Arundel site had been considered a sure bet for slots, the Sun reports. Lawmakers had envisioned more than 4,700 machines in the county. |
