Maryland Slot Opponents Hold Rally22 March 2004MARYLAND – As reported by the Cecil Whig: "Aaron W. Meisner sees the bills aimed at bringing slots gambling to Maryland as monsters. "And he views the estimated 350 people who attended an anti-slots rally Friday night at Pleasant View Baptist Church in Port Deposit as crusaders who will slay those beasts. "Meisner urged them to go to Annapolis on Tuesday when the House Ways and Means Committee is scheduled to take up various slots bills for the first time this session. "Meisner also asked them to make their anti-slots presence known in Annapolis when future hearings related to the issue are held. "…Proponents claim that slots will generate $800 million in annual revenue for the state, easing a multitude of government budget woes. "But guest speakers who addressed the crowd Friday night maintained that problems created by slots would more than offset the financial good. "…Slots will take a toll on the quality of life for thousands of residents, several speakers reported…" |
