Maryland Slot Bill Passes25 February 2005ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – As reported by the Baltimore Sun: "A bill to legalize slot machines in Maryland won 71 votes -- the exact number needed for passage -- in the House of Delegates this afternoon. "Many lawmakers stood and cheered after the final vote was tallied. The votes crossed party lines, and 66 delegates objected to the legislation in a roll call vote. "The bill would authorize 9,500 slot machines at four locations in Anne Arundel, Harford and Frederick counties, and at the state-owned and money-losing Rocky Gap resort in Allegany County. "The measure is significantly different from the Senate bill, and Speaker Michael E. Busch has indicated that he sees little need to compromise with the Senate, which passed its version of a slots plan last week. "…However, Busch said with the bill getting exactly the 71 votes needed for passage, there is little, if any, room to compromise with the governor and the Senate…" |
