Maryland Report Refutes Slot Argument

MARYLAND – As reported by the Maryland Gazette: "A report to be released today by the Maryland Tax Education Foundation refutes arguments made by the owners of horse racing tracks that they will wither if they do not get slot machines.

"Jeffrey C. Hooke, chairman of the nonpartisan, nonprofit foundation, said the track owners' arguments about the threats to their industry are overblown. Giving them a slot machine monopoly would result in a subsidy of more than $300 million a year, most of which would go into track owners' pockets, not into track upgrades, he said.

"…Hooke said that although there has been a 37 percent decline in thoroughbred breeding in Maryland over the past 10 years, standardbred foals for harness racing have more than doubled, leading to an overall decline of just 12 percent…"
