Maryland horse racing numbers dip4 January 2008MARYLAND -- As reported by the Baltimore Business Journal: "The Maryland Jockey Club said Thursday the total amount of wagering on horse racing in 2007 declined 8 percent. "As a result of five fewer racing days, wagering slid to $883.8 million in 2007, compared with $960.2 million in 2006. "Wagering at the Laurel Park Fall Meet fell 3.3 percent from 2006 and spring betting at Pimlico was down 6 percent. "...Maryland's struggling horse racing industry has faced tough times in the past several years. "Members of the industry have been lobbying state lawmakers for years on the need for slot machine gambling to increase purses. Maryland faces stiff competition from surrounding states -- Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia -- that have gone live with slots..." |
