Maryland Governor: Slots Still have Slim Chance

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland -- As reported by Delmarva: "Gov. Robert Ehrlich said Tuesday that slots on the Lower Shore could still be a possibility, but it will require a groundswell of public support that probably doesn't exist.

"When Dorchester County was briefly included in a Senate slots bill just days before a Feb. 27 vote, gaming supporters on the Lower Shore were galvanized.

"Though Dorchester was eventually pulled from the final Senate bill, in recent weeks slots supporters have been mobilizing and elected officials in Worcester County and Cambridge have been calling for referendums on the issue.

"…During his 2002 campaign, Ehrlich found strong support for slots from communities surrounding Maryland's horse racing venues, with the exception of Ocean Downs in Berlin.

"…Though community support is a key factor in choosing locations for slots, referendums aren't the proper forum for making that determination, according to Ehrlich.

"…Referendum supporters include the Worcester County Commissioners and Dorchester County Council President Glenn Bramble. Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37-Dorchester, has said a vote is the best way to gauge public opinion…"
