Maryland Governor Debuts Slot Bill

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – As reported by the Maryland Gazette: "After weeks of grumbling about the prospects of passing a slots bill, Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. will again introduce a plan to legalize 15,500 slots to raise money for school construction and education aid to local governments.

"The bill is identical to the proposal Ehrlich (R) submitted last year, but it includes $100 million to school construction and $50 million for the geographic cost index that is part of the Thornton Commission education funding formula.

"…The slots bill came as little surprise to legislative leaders in light of the governor's relentless call for slots approval during Wednesday's annual beg-a-thon, an event when local government leaders come to Annapolis to plead for more school construction dollars from the Board of Public Works.

"Ehrlich's slots bill would put up to 3,500 slots at Pimlico, Laurel and Rosecroft racetracks and 1,000 machines at a proposed racetrack in Allegany County. It also would authorize a maximum of 4,000 slots at two "destination locations" other than racetracks…"
