Maryland fraternal groups may get slots

OCEAN CITY, Maryland -- As reported by The (Salisbury) Daily Times: "The Town Council will bring back the discussion of allowing local fraternal groups such Elks Lodges or American Legion chapters to have their own set of slot machines from which they could profit.

"Jim Flaig, treasurer of the Ocean City Elks Lodge 2645, in a letter to the council, sought its support of the measure, which they will they hope to have passed and made effective by April 1.

"Flaig said his group already has spoken with State Delegates Norman Conway and James Mathias, and they also are trying to set up a meeting with the Speaker of the House Michael Busch and State Senate President Thomas V. 'Mike' Miller.

"A bill that would have let fraternal groups have slots machines within their clubs, accessible only to members and guests, failed in the state legislature last session..."
