Maryland Casino Referendum Efforts Stalled

MARYLAND – As reported by the Delmarva Now: "Several avenues to a popular vote on slots this fall seemed to close Monday in Annapolis, along with the chance of legalizing slot machine gambling this year.

"In the afternoon, Sen. Richard Colburn's bill to allow a Dorchester County referendum on slots was being held by a House of Delegates subcommittee, he said in a telephone interview.

"…Colburn's bill would place a question regarding slots on the November presidential election ballot in Dorchester County alone.

"…As Colburn waited for his bill to reach the House floor, he said committee members seemed more interested in a possible constitutional amendment that would raise the stakes of a slots poll, taking the question statewide and making it legally binding.

"The constitutional amendment, proposed by Del. Shane Pendergrass, D-13-Howard, would allow voters to permit or reject the possibility of slots licenses in their counties…"
