Maryland Anti-Gambling Group, Bingo Halls Face Off

MARYLAND – As reported by the Annapolis, Maryland Capital-Gazette: "An anti-gambling lobbying group and the county's three bingo halls are drawing battle lines over a proposal to boost jackpots and offer slots-style video terminals.

"Following a vote earlier this month by the county Amusement License Commission to support the proposal, County Council members are also taking sides and bracing for a fight this summer.

"Owners of Bingo World in Brooklyn Park, Delta Daily Double Bingo in Laurel and Wayson's Bingo in Lothian have asked the county to authorize the video bingo machines to make them more competitive with slots parlors.

"They also want changes to county law allowing bigger jackpots and linked games where up to 3,400 players can vie for jackpots as high as $300,000, compared with the current $15,000 limit.

"Glen Burnie-based NOcasiNO Maryland intends to fight attempts to expand gambling in the county.

"…But Edward O. Wayson Jr., an attorney representing the bingo halls and part-owner of Wayson's Bingo, said people are making judgments about the machines sight unseen…"
