Many Seniors Visit Casinos to Socialize More Than to Gamble

"...Casino trips for seniors are more about socializing than gambling, said Dwyer, who represents the Nugget at senior events throughout Northern California.

"While one recent study claims seniors that frequently gamble in casinos are more at risk of financial difficulties, other studies, local experts and gaming officials say seniors are more interested in the trip to a casino than gaming.

"...A 2003 study funded by the federal government's National Institute of Justice said that elderly casino customers 'generally exercise better money management and experience proportionately fewer gambling problems than the general population.'

"...Another study cited by the Washington, D.C.-based American Gaming Association was conducted by researchers at Michigan State University who examined the habits of older female gamblers.

"'The primary motivation for gambling with elderly women is excitement and entertainment,' the study said. 'Money, reliance on source of income and addiction do not appear to be motivators for this group. As such, problem gambling is not expected to be a problem with elderly women gamblers.'..."
