Many Favor Calexico Casino

CALEXICO, California – As reported by the San Diego Tribune: "On the sidewalks in front of the colorful bargain stores, perfume shops and taquerias, it's easy to find supporters of a San Diego County tribe's proposal to build an off-reservation hotel-casino in this border city.

"…Among more than a dozen mostly Spanish-speaking people questioned at random last week from both sides of the border, almost all strongly favor the casino proposal.

"…Tuesday's special election in Calexico has only one item on the ballot, Measure N. It asks whether the city should negotiate a casino-development agreement with the Manzanita tribe in East County.

"…If voters support the project, Manzanita wants to build a hotel-casino 50 miles from its reservation in San Diego County's eastern mountains. The tribe hopes to draw most of its customers from Mexicali, a city of 1.2 million and the capital of Baja California Norte.

"…No specific site has been identified, but Manzanita has told the city its casino would have 2,000 slot machines, 45 card tables, restaurants and a 200-room hotel. The tribe says it would provide 2,400 jobs, with preference to Calexico residents…"
