Manitoba Tribes Want Cut of Gaming Profits

MANITOBA – As reported by the Winnipeg Sun: "The Manitoba government is negotiating a profit-sharing deal with aboriginals who want 12% of the province's gambling profits and exclusive authority over all gaming on First Nations.

"Ian Cramer, business advisor for the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs (AMC), said natives make up 12% of the population of Manitoba and therefore should receive an equal portion of the revenue generated from all casinos, bingos and video lottery terminals across the province.

"…Twelve percent of this year's estimated profit from Manitoba Lotteries Corp. is $34 million.

"First Nations already keeps all profits from the two on-reserve casinos and 90% of all VLT revenue from on-reserve sites.

"…The AMC is also asking the province for authority over all gaming activity on reserves.

"The proposed First Nations Gaming Corp. would replace Manitoba Lotteries Corp. (MLC) as the regulating body on reserves and oversee on-reserve VLTs, bingos and casinos…"
