Manitoba Smoking Ban Leads to Job Loss12 August 2004WINNEPEG, Manitoba – As reported by the Canadian Press: "Manitoba Lotteries Corp. will give severance packages to 269 workers — a move the corporation says is necessary because of Winnipeg's tough smoking ban. "The corporation, which operates two casinos in Winnipeg and manages video lottery terminals in bars across the province, offered voluntary severance packages to its employees last month as a way to cut costs. "…The corporation has been looking to cut costs since last September, when Winnipeg expanded its anti-smoking bylaw to cover all indoor public spaces, including bars and casinos. "…The gambling industry is expected to take another hit in October, when a province-wide smoking ban is scheduled to take effect. "The ban is expected to drain at least $50-million annually from the lottery corporation's coffers…" |
