Manitoba May Allow Sunday Gambling15 December 2003WINNIPEG, Manitoba – As reported by the Canadian Press: "He hasn't made up his mind, but Manitoba's gaming minister is sending signals he may bow to pressure from bar owners and allow them to operate video lottery terminals on Sundays. "`Lounges and bars have been open in Manitoba for years and years and years seven days a week,' Scott Smith, the minister responsible for the Manitoba Lotteries Corporation, said in an interview. "Unlike other provinces, Manitoba forces bars to shut down their gambling machines on Sundays, while the same machines continue to operate at casinos and racetracks. "…The association also believes expanded gambling would help its members recoup some of the customers they expect to lose next October, when a province-wide ban on smoking in enclosed public places takes effect. "Smith also compares the idea of gambling on Sundays to the Sunday shopping debate of the early 1990s, when the province lifted labour restrictions that kept many large stores closed…" |
