Manitoba Keeps Door Shut to Casino Proposal

MANITOBA – As reported by the Brandon Sun: "A city councillor wants to re-open talks with Sioux Valley Dakota Nation about building a casino in Brandon, but the province says the possibility of such a project died years ago.

"'I want to move for the next meeting (of council) that the City of Brandon invite the Sioux Valley chief and council to meet with us to talk about their plans re: a casino,' Coun. Errol Black (Riverview) said yesterday.

"But, according to the province, the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation is not currently allowed to build a casino.

"'From the province's perspective, the Sioux Valley project will not proceed,' said Liz Stephenson of the Manitoba Gaming Control Commission in an interview from Winnipeg.

"…Peter Dalla-Vicenza, a spokesman for Gaming Minister Dave Chomiak, also said the Sioux Valley project is dead, and has been for a long time.

"But even if future casino projects are permitted, it is unclear whether Sioux Valley Dakota Nation would be included…"
