Manitoba Gambling Ads Criticized

MANITOBA – As reported by the Globe and Mail: "Only a few weeks after a study found more gambling addicts in Manitoba than in any other province, critics are complaining that the province has barrelled ahead with advertising that promotes gambling, discussions about expanding gambling hours and a market study to look at options for new casinos.

"Manitoba Lotteries Corp. launched a $370,000 print and television campaign over the Christmas holidays, after sending 133,000 direct-mail brochures to rural homes earlier in December.

"The blitz was partly intended to encourage new gamblers who might have been turned off by smoke-filled casinos in the past, said Lotteries spokeswoman Susan Olynik.

"…That approach alarmed some addiction experts.

"'If you bring new people in, some of them will be susceptible to gambling addiction,' said Garry Smith, a gambling researcher at the Alberta Gaming Research Institute.

"…Manitoba has the highest concentration of problem gamblers in Canada, according to a study published last month by Statistics Canada…"
