Man Admits to Running Illegal Gambling Operation11 June 2004IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: "Bob Derryberry admitted Thursday that he took illegal bets on sports events for roughly three years as head of a Norwalk bookmaking conspiracy. "Derryberry, the sole remaining defendant from a much-publicized series of arrests last year, pleaded guilty of two felonies as part of a deal with authorities that could let him avoid prison. "…The charges, first filed in early 2003 after a five-month state investigation, accused Derryberry of illegal gambling, bookmaking and ongoing criminal conduct. Derryberry was one of 11 people arrested; eight were charged with felonies. If convicted, he faced up to 45 years in prison. "Derryberry pleaded guilty of bookmaking and conspiracy. The crimes carry a combined maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $17,500 fine…" |
