Mall of America Officials Push Casino Plan

MINNESOTA – As reported by the Minnesota Star-Tribune: "Envisioning a mega-casino that would send more money to the government than other new gambling venues proposed for the Twin Cities, Mall of America officials said Monday that a casino-hotel complex at the shopping center would produce more than $1 billion in annual gambling revenue and $267 million a year for the state.

"The calculations are based on a casino at the mall having an estimated 7,000 slot machines, nearly double what has been proposed for the state-tribal casino backed by the governor, and more than twice the number of slots proposed for the Canterbury Park racino.

"The mall released a summary of its analysis as Gov. Tim Pawlenty, the Canterbury Park race track and three Indian bands consider restructuring their plans for a state-sponsored casino or racino in the face of legislative resistance.

"…The analysis by the Innovations Group, a national consulting firm to the leisure and hospitality industries, also concluded that the mall casino would generate more than $14 million in annual tax revenue for Hennepin County and more than $13 million in annual tax revenue for Bloomington…"
