Mall Madness Continues on the Strip

30 May 1999

Las Vegas could be giving Minneapolis a run for it's money in a bid to establish itself as a super-mall shopping Mecca. Less than a week after Circus Circus announced that it's plopping a mall between the Luxor and Mandalay Bay, news arrived that the rebuilt Aladdin will feature a 500,000-square-foot mall of its own.

The $250 million upscale mall, Desert Passage, will feature exotic marketplaces, street festivals, shops, restaurants and night clubs.

"We wanted it to feel like you're going through a movie,'' Dessert Passage Director of Marketing Paul Beirnes said at the retail industry's International Council of Shopping Centers conference. "There'll always be something going on.''

The creators of the new shopping center believe it will compete well with other malls because it's entrance will be right on the strip. Other malls are set up so shoppers have to walk through the casino first.

Dessert Passage is due to open in spring 2000.
