Malaysian Official Resigns Over Gambling Debts

MALAYSIA – As reported by the New Straits Times: "Datuk Seri Osu Sukam has resigned as the Papar Umno division chief, after his gambling debts of RM7.1 million became a millstone for him.

"The former Sabah Chief Minister tendered his resignation to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Musa Aman during a one-hour meeting at his home in Damansara, Kuala Lumpur today.

"His resignation was accepted and the division's deputy chairman, Datuk Abdul Rahim Ismail, was appointed acting chief.

"However, his resignation was merely a formality. In the current political climate, there is great emphasis on leadership by example and good governance. Any Umno politician who drags down the name of the ruling party by his actions would find it difficult to cling to power.

"…Last week, an application by London's Ritz Hotel Casino and RHC Ltd to enforce an English High Court judgment against Osu for RM7.1 million in gambling debts was dismissed by the High Court here.

"But while he was spared having to settle that debt, it was evident that it would have been difficult for him to hold on to his position as division chief…"
