Maine slot bill shelved

AUGUSTA, Maine -- As reported by the Bangor Daily News: "In the closing hours of the Legislature on Thursday, a bill that would allow the Penobscot Indians to operate 400 slot machines in conjunction with their high-stakes bingo games on Indian Island was carried over to the January session next year.

"The measure had received all but final approval but faced a gubernatorial veto.

"'We thought this was the best thing to do,' said Rep. Donna Loring of the Penobscot Nation, the sponsor of the legislation.

"...Loring said Gov. John Baldacci has made it clear during meetings with tribal representatives and supporters of the legislation that he would veto the bill. It received strong support in both chambers but apparently was short of the two-thirds needed to override a veto in the Senate, she noted.

"...The governor said his opposition to further slot machine gambling has been consistent. He opposed legislation last year to allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to operate a racetrack casino. The tribe collected the signatures required under provisions of the state constitution, and the question will be on the November ballot..."
