Maine racino vote soon31 October 2007CALAIS, Maine -- As reported by the Seacoast News: "With questions of economic development, crime and business in Washington County, the main issue still stands: Will a proposed racino get a 'yes' or a 'no' from voters on Nov. 6? "The question of whether residents of Maine should approve the harness racing and gambling facility in Calais, right next to the Canadian border, will top the referendum election. Similar referendums on facilities in Sanford, Kittery and Biddeford have been voted down by residents in the past. "Proponents of the proposed Passamaquoddy Indian Tribe-owned facility say it would create jobs and bring money into one of the most cash-strapped regions of the state. Opponents contend that the racino could raise crime and would not bring in promised revenues to help the county..." |
