Maine Racino Developer Connected to Anti-Casino Group

28 November 2003

AUGUSTA, Maine – As reported by the Associated Press: "The owner of a company that hopes to bring slot machines to a Bangor harness race track acknowledged his connection to a group that's been advocating against racinos in other Maine cities, but said he knew nothing about it.

"Las Vegas developer Shawn Scott said people associated with his pro-gaming organization acted in what they believed were his best interests when they registered the `Good Morals for Maine' political action committee.

"…"Good Morals for Maine" has been fighting racino proposals in Westbrook and Saco. It was tied to Scott because its fax number matches that of two organizations connected to him, the Maine Coalition for Racing and Slots, and Capital One.

"…Scarborough Downs has been trying to interest towns neighboring the southern Maine track in hosting a racino. A law authorized by Maine voters Nov. 4 allows slot machines at Scarborough Downs and Bangor Historic Raceway, or within a five-mile radius of either track, if local voters also approve it by the end of the year.

"In his statement, Scott apologized to residents and officials in Saco and Westbrook for the activities of the `Good Morals' group.

"…Scott said he will continue to support the agreement with others in the racing industry to promote the racino plan…"
