Maine racino battle heats up18 October 2007AUGUSTA, Maine -- As reported by the Ellsworth American: "According to mandatory campaign finance reports, the Passamaquoddy Tribe has put in $300,000 of its own money to fund the campaign for a racino in Washington County. "Those same reports, filed Oct. 10 and covering the period that ended Sept. 30, show opponents have raised just over $94,000 to fight the proposal that will be on the November ballot. "Both sides claim the higher ground on their campaign finance sources, with the tribe saying they are doing this on their own and CasinosNO! arguing its smaller amount represents donations from the grassroots. "With just 26 days before the Nov. 6 election, both sides agree this will be a modest campaign compared to the last time gambling was on the ballot. Then the proposal was an Indian-run casino in Sanford opposed by CasinosNO! and the combined campaign spent more than $10 million. The casino failed, but racino gambling — now allowed near the horse track in Bangor — was approved, setting the stage for the racino the Passamaquoddy Tribe wants to build in Calais..." |
