Maine Racing Proposal Still Alive

MAINE – As reported by Foster's: "A proposal to establish a racetrack casino in Washington County is still alive. It is likely to go to the voters of Maine in referendum form in November 2006 — and it is likely to be approved.

"Gov. John Baldacci has fought the good fight to halt the expansion of gaming, but time and timing are against him. While he promises to veto racino legislation when the Legislature reconvenes, he adds he 'will not stand in the way of any future effort that places the issue of expansion of casino gambling before the voters.'

"…Recent weeks have twice seen the Legislature give its backing to a casino in a corner of the state through which there is heavy tourist traffic between the United States and Canada.

"Members of the Passamaquoddy Tribe in the 'Down East' edge of the state see the expansion of gambling in Washington County as something that will give the economy of the region a boost and provide the tribe with additional revenue.

"…Earlier this month, an application was filed with state election officials to put the question before the voters…"
