Maine Group in for Long Haul6 January 2004MAINE – As reported by the Portland Press Herald: "The group behind successful campaigns to block new gambling ventures in Maine says it will find the money it needs to continue its fight. "The leaders of Casinos No! decided Monday to resume fund-raising so it can hire a legislative lobbyist and maintain a paid staff to quash future attempts to bring slot machines to a racetrack in southern Maine. "…Maine residents and public officials formed the political action committee in March 2002 when they first learned of a proposed tribal casino in York County. When the proposed project came up for a statewide referendum last Nov. 4, voters overwhelmingly turned it down. "…Casinos No! said it is now focused on discouraging the Legislature from giving the Downs more time to find a new home elsewhere in southern Maine…" |
