Maine Governor to Veto Video Gaming at OTBs7 November 2003AUGUSTA, Maine – As reported by the Kennebec Journal: "Gov. John Baldacci renewed his promise to veto a bill that would allow off-track betting parlors, including one in Waterville, to install video gaming machines. "…`It's been my intent to veto that legislation,' he said. `That has not changed. It was reaffirmed by the action of the public and the overwhelming number of people opposed to casino gambling and frankly, gambling in general.' "About 67 percent of voters rejected a proposed resort casino in Sanford, but a proposal to allow slot machines at harness racing tracks in Bangor and Scarborough passed with 53 percent of the vote. "…The state's Office of Fiscal and Program Review estimates the machines would bring in $13 million to the state in 2004-2005. "…Baldacci said the casino attracted so much attention that voters didn't have a chance to focus on the racino question. "`If they'd had another week, maybe it would have not had that support,' he said…" |
