Maine Dumps Slot Effort

AUGUSTA, Maine – As reported by the Portland Press Herald: "The Legislature has called off an effort to legalize slot machines in off-track betting parlors.

"The Senate and the House passed a bill in June to allow the slots, but recalled it from Gov. John Baldacci's desk Thursday, hours before he planned to veto the measure. The bill's supporters agreed to abandon a fight they knew they could not win.

"…The Legislature could not have overridden a veto because supporters of the bill lacked the necessary support - at least two-thirds of the votes in both the House and Senate.

"While conceding defeat, backers of the bill vowed to try to find another way to increase revenues for the state's five off-track betting parlors and, in turn, the harness racing industry…"
