Maine Casino Group Push Voters to Vote

MAINE – As reported by the Portland Press Herald: "They have spent millions of dollars and run tough campaigns, but now there is little that opponents or supporters of a proposed casino in Sanford can do to win votes.

"Now, the two organizations that have spent about a year trying to convince voters how to vote have shifted their priorities. They're spending the last hours of the campaign convincing voters to vote at all.

"There will still be television advertisements, still be leafletting. But the waning moments of campaigns are all about Get Out The Vote.

"Both Think About It, the group that has campaigned for a casino, and Casinos No!, which opposes a gambling resort, have been making automated telephone calls to registered voters.

"…Both Dennis Bailey, the spokesman for Casinos No!, and Erin Lehane, the spokeswoman for Think About It, said they believe the voters have made up their minds.

"…Bailey and Lehane will be on several radio shows today and Tuesday, and Think About It has a rally in Augusta today. Casinos No! canceled a rally it had planned for Portland today, but will have a rally in its campaign office in Sanford today…"
