Maine Casino Fight Cost Over $10 Million

AUGUSTA, Maine -- As reported by the Kennebec Journal: "The recent fight over building a casino in Maine, which already held the record as the most costly referendum campaign in Maine history, got even more expensive Tuesday when new finance reports showed that the two sides spent a combined total of more than $10 million.

"Think About It, which promoted the casino referendum, spent more than $6.9 million on the campaign through Dec. 9, according to reports submitted to the state Tuesday. Casinos No!, the leading opposition group, reported more than $3.1 million in expenditures during the campaign.

"Maine voters overwhelmingly rejected the casino referendum, which would have allowed the Penobscot Nation and the Passamaquoddy Tribe to build a casino in Maine. But they backed a separate, lower-profile referendum allowing harness tracks to install slot machines and create so-called `racinos.'..."
