Magna Wants Piece of New York Franchise

NEW YORK – As reported by the New York Times Union: "Backed by a $340,000 lobbying team that includes former U.S. Sen. Alfonse D'Amato, Canadian racetrack giant Magna Entertainment Corp. is maneuvering for a piece of the New York Racing Association's franchise on the state's thoroughbred tracks.

"Toronto-based Magna Entertainment, which owns several major racing venues in other states, has long wanted a foothold in New York state and would surely bid on NYRA's franchise on Saratoga, Aqueduct and Belmont if it ever was made available by the state.

"…On Wednesday, NYRA and Magna officials confirmed the overture, but wouldn't provide details. NYRA said it rejected the notion of a relationship, although some Albany leaders are clearly open to Magna's ideas.

"…NYRA is trying to build the biggest VLT casino in the state, but has been dealing with setbacks and obstacles…"
