Magna drops Romulus plans

ROMULUS, Michigan -- As reported by the Journal Newspapers: "The surprise announcement by Canadian-based Magna Entertainment that they would not build a $100 million racetrack in the city of Romulus has left officials with one question: What's next?

"Tim Keyes, Romulus economic development director, said he was surprised when he heard about the announcement last Thursday, but said there are other plans in place for the 212-acre parcel near Vining and Wick roads.

"...On Thursday, Aug. 9, Racing Commissioner Christine White made an announcement that Magna was giving up the license for the Romulus track. The announcement shocked Romulus officials and residents.

"The development – a key piece in the city 'racino' concept for a parcel of land near Vining Road near the Detroit Metropolitan Airport – came as a blow to city officials, who were hoping to see ground broken for the track this year..."
