Madera County Casino Debated16 August 2005MADERA, California – As reported by the Fresno Bee: "Supporters and opponents of a resort casino just north of the city will make their cases today before Madera County supervisors, who will vote on whether to approve a resolution for the $250 million facility. "The casino, proposed by the North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians, would be built at Freeway 99 and Avenue 17. It has generated opposition because it is not located on the Mono Indians' rancheria. "Two former Madera mayors are among 15 business and community leaders who launched a coalition Monday that supports development of the casino. "…But Joyce Burel, chairwoman of the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians, says she will be at today's meeting to oppose the casino because it is at least 40 miles from the Mono tribal lands around North Fork.
