It was during his 10-year sentence in prison that Lyfe Jennings developed his honest sound thanks to isolation and inspiration from Erykah Badu’s album Baduizm. He was inspired and had the feeling that this introspective edge to his music was worth developing. Two days after his December 2002 release from prison, he recorded a four-song demo CD, and within a month he was on-stage at the famous Apollo Theater. On the fast track to success, in August 2004, Jennings released his debut album, Lyfe 268-192, titled after his prison inmate number. The more hip-hop-oriented follow-up The Phoenix arrived in 2006, with Lyfe Change in 2008, I Still Believe in 2010, Lucid in 2013, Tree of Lyfe in 2015, and 777 in 2019. Over the past 20 years, Jennings' has had continued success, with each of his albums having peaked in the Top 10 of Billboard's R&B chart. Throughout his career, Lyfe has worked with the likes of Three 6 Mafia, Young Buck, Ludacris, Fabolous, Fantasia and more. |
