LV Sands Steps Up UK Campaign

UNITED KINGDOM – As reported by the Financial Times: 'One of the US casino operators hoping to win licences to operate Las Vegas-style super-casinos in the UK has stepped up lobbying efforts with local authorities.

"Only one Las Vegas super- casino will be given a licence to operate under new gambling laws, which provoked a furore in the run-up to the May election following a campaign to kill the legislation.

"But Las Vegas Sands, owner of the Venetian in Las Vegas, is pressing ahead with plans for several super- casinos in a bid to build support and encourage the government to extend the number of licences it issues.

"Richard Caborn, the minister for gambling, said recently the government would move to increase the number of super-casinos but only if there was sufficient demand from MPs, local authorities and the general public.

"Las Vegas Sands has already won support from local authorities in Glasgow, after having struck a deal with Glasgow Rangers football club.

"It has also struck deals with Sheffield United and Birmingham City.

"…Las Vegas Sands said casino gaming would be a 'small part' of the project and said each of its schemes had the potential to boost urban regeneration by creating thousands of jobs…"
