LV Sands Meets with Suppliers6 February 2006BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania – As reported by the Morning Call: "From contractors to caterers, 157 people from minority- and women-owned businesses have lined up for today's workshop on the types of services and supplies the Las Vegas Sands Corp. will need if gambling comes to south Bethlehem. "While the Sands won't know if it wins a gaming license until June at the earliest, the gambling giant is starting to disseminate information now about how the new industry would prime the pump for local business. If the workshop turnout is as high as expected, the people packed into the Banana Factory also could paint a powerful picture that could help the Sands build a case that it deserves a slots license. "Among the criteria on which the 22 slots applicants will be judged is diversity in its future hiring practices. "…Sands officials say they will let the company's diversity track record speak for its hiring practices, and the workshops are the result of community demands. While meeting with community groups, a concern was expressed about getting diverse companies to build and supply the Sands. "But to ensure the Sands would be hiring minority and women-owned vendors, the businesses must be certified as such. In Pennsylvania, certification can take two months, and just 46 are licensed in Northampton and Lehigh counties, according to the state…" |
